Description
Nifty little clip on fix for your non-functional Odometer. Made from strong and durable 3D printed ABS plastic. This part was designed by a fellow Vanagon enthusiast Nathan Scherrer who gave me permission to make this available to the community.
NOTE: this clamp is not compatible with early Vanagon speedometers! This only fits the last generation of speedometers with the plastic sub frame!
Note: the clamp won’t fix them all. If the axle isn’t turning the grey gear on the right side that turns the digits, the clamp won’t help. Also, the slit may have to be filled.
I’m offering this at a low cost out of respect for Nathan being so generous with his design.
Instructions:
1. Remove cluster from van.
2. remove the screws from the back of the speedometer/odometer portion.
3. Pull out the unit.
4. Slide the clip into place.
5. Assembly is reverse of removal.

The worm gear clamp does exactly what it is supposed to do. This clamp keeps the drive gear from sliding away from the worm gear and is easy to install.

Works exactly as advertised. Had to file the “slit” as noted in the instructions, but after that was a perfect fit.

The odometer fix worked perfectly. Very simple to install. It’s great to know how far the road less travelled, actually is.

This fit perfectly and easily clipped on. It’s holding the gears in place. The only caveat is, if the metal gear is spinning on the shaft, this won’t stop it. Besides using this clip, I also peened the inner surface of the metal gear, and made some slices on the end of the shaft to make sure the metal gear could no longer spin freely.

If you’re ordering the vanagon odometer fix piece, be sure you have the plastic speedo base and not the aluminum one as it does not fit the older aluminum one

Quick shipping. Fixed my broken 87 vanagon odometer. 3d print quality was average and not sanded or anything, but it is going to be hidden in the dash so that is acceptable. Thanks for making an innovative product.

I’ll assume that the part will continue to functions as intended, it’s only been installed a week but my odometer is racking up miles. Installation on our ’84 was painless and required no modifications to either the part or the speedometer. Highly recommended.

very clever fix

This will be installed in the near future, “Maeve” an 81 is in bed for the winter. i am certain the odometer gear is not engaged, hopefully this part is the easy fix.

So happy to find this item, I’ve had the idea of coming up with something that would hold the gear in place but you put that idea into action. Keep up the good work, I’m looking forward to your future work. Cheers!
